ThissectionappliestousersinEuropeandothercountrieswheretheEuro‐ISDNETS300
standardissupported(Europe,muchofSouthAmerica,Australia,SouthAfrica,Mexico,etc).
SincetherearevirtuallynooptionswhenorderingEuroISDN,thissectionisprobablynot
needed,howeverwethoughtwecouldhelpbysummarizingwha
tyouwillrequire.
IfyouliveinacountryoutsideofNorthAmericathatdoesnotsupportEuro‐ISDN,yourlocal
TelosSystemsrepresentativeshouldbeabletoprovideyouwithinformationaboutordering
(andusing)ISDNinyourarea.WeassumeyouhavereadthedescriptionofIS
DNinSection7
(ISDNBasics)andarefamiliarwithISDN’sbasicconcepts.Ifyouhavenotreadthatsection,
doingsonowwillhelpyoutobetterunderstandtheinformationthatfollows.
OnoneISDNBRIcircuit,therearethreesimultaneousbi‐directionalchannels:two64kbps
“bearer”or“B”channelsforthetransmissionofuserinformationan
done16kbps“data”or“D”
channelforcallset‐upandstatuscommunication.Thatiswhythisissometimescalled2B+D
service.YoucanusetheBchannels,butonlythephonecompaniesandequipment
manufacturerscanusuallyusetheDchannel.

eperspectiveoftelephonenetworkrouting,eachchannelappearstobeaseparateline
withitsownnumberandindependentdial‐outcapabilities.Sinceeachhastobedialedor
answeredseparately,theyappeartobe“lines”tousersalso.WerefertoaBchannelasa“line”
ontheZephyrXstream’smenu

ISDNcomesintoyourfacilityontwowires,justlikeplainoldtelephoneservice(POTS).There
theTelecomwillinstallaNT1(NetworkTermination)toprovideyouaccesstotheS(4‐wire)
interfaceusuallyprovided.YouwillbeconnectingthistotheZephyrXstream’stop(8‐pin
)jack.

We’veseenBasicRateInterfaceISDNcalledbyanumberofnames.Theterm“S∅”is
sometimesusedasatechnicaltermforISDNBRI.Ofcourse,theterm“BRI”isalsoused,mostly
byTelecomtechnicians.Themostcommontermwe’veseeninEuropeis“ISDN‐2”.

Thesearesimplyyourphonenumbers.Thenumberofdigitswillvarydependingonyourarea.
NormallyeachISDNBRIcircuitwillhavethreeMSNs.MSNsareoptional,anddonotneedtobe
