STREAMING MODES
DependingontheInterfaceselectedintheTELmenu,theXstreamsstreamingworksdifferently.
Hereisareviewofthedifferentoptions:
HTTP
ThefamiliarPull‐OnlyHTTPremains,howeverwestronglyrecommendtheuse
ofoneofthefollowingRTPbasedoptions.TheZephyrisstillaserveronly,nota
client.HTTPstreamingisusedpri
marilywithdesktopplayers(Audioactive
Player,WinAmp,etc.)forconfidenceaudio.Itisnottobeusedonthepublic
internetduetolimitationsintheZephyr'sTCPstack.Iflong‐range/long‐term
HTTPstreamingisrequired,aShoutcastServer(orotherstreamreplicator)can
beuse
dasaclient.
RTP/UDP
Real‐TimeProtocolstreamsarePush‐only.Oneservercansendtoseveral
clients,whodecodetheaudioiftheyarealsoinRTPstreamingmode.RTPisa
transportprotocol,notaconnectionprotocol,whichiswhyitworksinthisway.
The"connectionprotocol"istheuserhittingtheDialbutton
.
SIP
UnlikeRTP,SIPisaconnectionprotocol,notatransportprotocol.SIP
negotiatesabi‐directionalconnectionbetweenthetwounits,behavingmuch
likeatelephoneorISDNcall.Progressisrelatedtothefarsideaswellasthe
localuser.Th
efarendunitmaybereportedasbusy(unlikeRTP,whichsends
regardlessofthereadinessofthereceiver),etc.
SIPusesRTPasitstransportprotocol.Whatthismeans,basically,isthatSIP
negotiatesforeachsideoftheconnectiontosendanRTP,push‐onlystreamto
theotherside.Theresultisabi‐dir
ectionalconnection.
PORTS(IPPORT)
EachIPdevicemusthaveanIPaddress.However,eachIPaddresscanhandle
multipleconnections,usingdifferentports.Sortoflikedifferentextensionson
thesameofficetelephonesystem.
