Mix-Minus
Allperceptualcodershavetoomuchdelayfortalentonremotetohearthemselvesviaaround‐
triploopwithoutan"echo"thatcanheannoyinganddisorienting.Therefore,aspecialmix‐
minus(sometimescalleda"clearfeed"or"mix‐minusone")arrangementisrequired–exactly
thesameashasbeenuse
dwithsatellitelinkedremotesforyears.TheEuropeanterm“mix
minusone”isclearerinthemosttypicalsituation.
Theprincipleisthis:Theremotetalentdoesnothearhimselfviathestudiocuereturn.Rather,
hismicrophoneismixedlocallywithastudiofeedthathasevery
thingbuttheremoteaudio–
thusthe“mix‐minus”designation.Theannouncergetsinhisheadphonesanon‐delayedversion
ofhimselfandaslightlydelayedversionofallofthestudiopieces.
Mostmoderndigitalconsolecanbeconfiguredtogeneratemix‐minuseswithoutuser
intervention.Ifyouareusinganolderconsolethatdoesnothavethisabili
ty,oranon‐broadcast
console,herearesomemethodsyoucanuse.
