Thinking about Problem Solving
Despitebestintentions,somethingcouldalwaysgowrong.Some
timestroubleshootingabalky
set‐upcanmakeeventhetoughestengineeraMaaloxandRogaineaddict.
Youcan'tfixanysystemwithouttherightworldview;azeitgeistofsuspiciontemperedbytrust
inthelawsofphysics,curiositydulledonlybythedeterminationtostayfocusedonasi
ngle
problem,andazealot'sregardforthescientificmethod.Perhapsthesearecharacteristicsofall
whosuccessfullypursuethetruth.Inaworldwherewearesurroundedbycomplexity,where
wedealdailywithequipmentandsystemsonlyhalf‐understood,itseemswisetofollow
understandingbyani
terativeloopoffocus,hypothesis,andexperiment.
Thenotionshereapplywhetheryouaresolvingproblemsatthesystemleveloratthe
componentlevel.Atthesystemlevel,theactionsyoumighttakewouldbeverydifferent–
checkingcables,tryingdifferentmenusettings–butthethinkingisthesame.
Toomanyti
mes,wefallinlovewithoursuppositions.Wearequicktoovertlyorsubconsciously
assumetheproblembeingchasedisduetolousydesign,thestupidphonecompany,orthe
manager’slatestmemo.
Armedwithahealthyskepticalattitude,thebasicphilosophyoftroubleshootinganysystemis
tofollowthe
sesteps:
• Observethebehaviortofindtheapparentproblem;
• Observecollateralbehaviortogainasmuchinformationaspossibleabout
theproblem;
• Rounduptheusualsuspects;
• Generateahypothesis;
• Generateanexperimenttotestthehypothesis;
• Fixtheproblem;
• Then,re
peat,ifnecessary,toattackadditionalproblems.
