Zephyr Xstream ISDN Compatibility
Protocols
TheTelconetworkandtheZephyrXstreamcommunicateviaa‘protocol’–thelanguagethe
userequipmentandthetelephonenetworkusetoconverse(ontheDchannel)forsettingup
callsandthelike.Thisiswheretherearedifferencesdependinguponthecentraloffice
equipmentusedonthelineandthesta
ndardswhicharesupportedbythatparticular
equipment.WhileeachtypewillworkwiththeZephyrXstream,thedifferencesneedtobe
takenintoaccountwhenlinesareorderedandtheZephyrXstreamsetup.
IntheUSA,telephonecompaniesuseeitherAT&T/Lucent5ESS,NorthernTelecom/NortelDMS‐
100,orSieme
nsEWSDswitches.EachofthesecansupporttheNationalISDN1(NI‐1)protocol
standard,whichhasbeenspecifiedbyBellcore,thetechnicallabthatwasjointlyownedbythe
phonecompanies.However,bothAT&TandNorthernTelecomhad“custom”versionsofISDN
whichpre‐datetheNI‐1s
tandardandafewswitcheshavenotbeenupgradedtothenewerNI‐1
standard.

CURIOSITY NOTE!
There is also a newer National ISDN-2 (NI-2) standard, but it designed to be compatible with
NI-1 for all of the basic functions.
InEurope(aswellasmuchoftherestoftheworld),thecommonstandardisEuro‐ISDN,
followingtheETS300standards.Itisan(apparentlysuccessful!)attemptforalloftheEuropean
telephonenetworkstouseasingle,compatibleprotocol.
InJapan,theprotocolusediscalledINS64.
