10 HOW TO UPDATE FIRMWARE
10.1 Firmware
This section describes the TM-D710A/E or TM-V71A/E transceiver itself, the TM-D710 operation
panel and how to update the firmware of RC-D710 and the TNC. Those using TM-D710A/E and
RC-D710 previously and who would like to utilize the SmartBeaconing and enhanced QSY
functions which was added to APRS must update the firmware.
10.2 Verifying Necessary Equipment
In order to update the equipment, each of the following is required:
Equipment to be updated (TM-D710A/E, TM-V71A/E, or RC-D710)
Computer
Communication cable (PG-5G or PG-5H)
Firmware update program
Kenwood provides the firmware update program for use on Windows operating systems. The
specifications for your computer in order to use this software are as shown in Table 10-1.

Note:
If using Windows Vista, it is not necessary to install the run-time environment specified above. Otherwise, if Microsoft .NET
Framework 2.0 (or later) is not installed, download the software from the following URL and install it prior to installing

Use the following procedure to determine if Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 (or later) is installed on your computer. The
example shown is for Windows XP.
Click “Start” > “Control Panel” > “Add or Remove Programs”. You should see “Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0” (or later) in
the list of installed software.
While updating the firmware, the transceiver or panel may be fully reset. If you do not wish to lose the memory contents
and configurations, save the current configuration data to a file prior to updating the firmware.
Depending on the type of computer, there may not be any equipped COM ports. In this case, you will need a USB-to-serial
port conversion cable.
