Handset of Philips CD145 won't recharge and makes ...

Handset of Philips CD145 won't recharge and makes a strange noise when back on the main base. I tried putting it on another base, but it doesn't charge either (though not making any noise). I removed the batteries and put them back in again, same thing. What can I do?
