The batteries appeared to die so I replaced them with new rechargeable ones I had charged up on a separate charger. These new batteries also then died as soon as I lifted the handset off the base (beeping and low battery icon). However the recharging icon is on and the batteries get warm when I leave the handset on the base which suggests they should be charging up.
