My phone is not working. I put in new batteries -...

My phone is not working. I put in new batteries - followed the instructions as if it were a new phone. The number did not display per the manual nor does the date display. It will not ring. When you put the set back in the charger it makes the noise but it is just not working. Need help as the manual does not show trouble shooting tips.
