I can't get my fax machine to work with my GE answ...

I can't get my fax machine to work with my GE answering machine Model 26990GE1-C and I can't find an owners manual. The answering machine doesn't seem to recognize the "fax tone" and doesn't answer the call at all (to receive the fax or answer the call) it just keeps ringing!
