My GE 29869GE2 Answering Machine just displays a ...

My GE 29869GE2 Answering Machine just displays a scrolling numbers in the message screen. The unit went out and plugging the AC adapter just displays rolling message numbers. The unit does not respond to stop, unplugging, or replugging in the unit AC. Is the AC adapter the culprit , do I need a new AC adapter, or the machine gone bad? Thanks
