My Caller ID is not working after making several a...

My Caller ID is not working after making several attempts...On the instructions, it describes how to set time/date, pulse/tone, area codes, etc. Does each of these have to be set for it to work? All I want to be able to see is the number calling in....What is the difference in pulse/tone ? Thanks....
