I have problems with my BT Freelance XT 3500 . 1-...

I have problems with my BT Freelance XT 3500 . 1-- From new the handsets always have the message "New Voicemail", I cant either search who has called, or get rid of the message. I don't subscribe to BT voicemail. 2--- The ans. machine does not take messages!, despite having tried with the handset and the base to set the phone to take messages!.
