I cant get messages on my answer phone to delete, ...

I cant get messages on my answer phone to delete, have tried the putting the 000 code in as it states, but........ What do l do when l have put the 000 code in the phone does it have to be when the phone is in the cradle or use dialling??? Recorded messages are full and l need to empty so l can get new messages!! Help!!
