Question About AT&T Cordless Telephone CL84100

I tries a few times to do battery installation and charging of my new CL84100 DECT 6.0 corded/cordless phone follwing the instructions on quick start guide. It didn't woirk. I have charged the handset for a good 16 hours. A message on the screen says " Out of range Or no power at base" Actually the charger light is on. What can I do?
