INSTALLATION
CAUTION
1. Never install telephone wiring during a
lightning storm.
2. Never install telephone jacks in wet locations
unless the jack is specifically designed for
wet locations.
3. Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or
terminals unless the incoming telephone line
has been disconnected at the network interface.
4. Use caution when installing or modifying
telephone lines.
NOTE: Refer to “FCC Requirements” section
before connection to the telephone line.
Installing Batteries/Setting Language
1. Disconnect the unit from the telephone line
and DC power.
2. Use a pen or paper clip to loosen the battery
cover. Open the battery compartment by pressing
down on the battery cover and sliding it away from
the unit.
3. INSERT THREE (3) AA ALKALINE
BATTERIES into the battery compartment and
be careful not to press any of the function keys
while inserting the batteries. Be sure to
observe proper battery polarity (+ and -).

IMPORTANT:
1. If you are using multiple Caller ID units in
your telephone installation, one FM144 must
be set to MAIN and all others must be set to
EXT in order to receive call waiting CALLER
ID information. Otherwise, the display will
show CALL WAITING and no Caller ID infor-
mation will be displayed.
2. You must subscribe to call waiting Caller ID
service from your local telephone company in
order to receive call information.
REVIEWING NEW CALLS
1. Press REVIEW s or REVIEW t and the display
will show the last new call information.
2. Repeatedly press REVIEW s or REVIEW t to
review all new call information from the newest to
the oldest call until the END OF NEW CALL is
displayed and the NEW CALL LED turns off.
REVIEWING ALL CALLS
1. Press REVIEW s and the unit will display the
oldest call record (CALL 01). Press REVIEW t
and the unit will display the newest call record
(CALL XX, up to 64).
2. Repeatedly press REVIEW s to review individ-
ual records from oldest call (CALL 01) to
newest call (CALL 64) or REVIEW t to review
records from newest to oldest.
3. Continue reviewing all calls until --END-- is
displayed.

In the absence of such purchase receipt, the warranty
period shall be one (1) year from the date of
manufacture. To obtain service under this warranty,
return the defective product to the Service Center
nearest you together with your sales slip and $9.50
for postage and handling. California residents need
only provide proof of purchase.
This warranty shall be invalid if the product is
damaged as result of defacement, misuse, abuse,
neglect, accident, destruction, or alteration of the
serial number, improper electrical voltages or
currents, repair, alterations or maintenance by any
person or party other than our own service facility
or an authorized service center, or any use violative
of instructions furnished by us. This warranty is
also invalid if this product is removed from the
country in which it was purchased, if it is used in a
country in which it is not registered for use, and /or
if it is used in a country for which it was not designed.
Due to variations in telephone systems and
communications laws, this product may be illegal
for use in some countries.

advance to give you an opportunity to maintain
uninterrupted telephone service. If you experience
trouble with this telephone equipment, disconnect
from the network until the problem has been
corrected or until you are sure that the equipment
is not malfunctioning.
This equipment may not be used on coin service
provided by the telephone company. Connection
to party lines is subject to state tariffs.

Phone Retail Sales under this warranty shall be
limited to repair or replacement (at our option),
during the warranty period of any part which
proves defective in material or workmanship under
normal installation use and service, provided the
product is returned to Southwestern Bell Freedom
®
Phone Retail Sales or to one of our Authorized
Service Centers with TRANSPORTATION
CHARGES PREPAID. Products returned to us or
to an authorized Service Center must be
accompanied by a copy of the purchase receipt.
FCC WANTS YOU TO KNOW
This equipment complies with Part 68 of the FCC
rules. On the bottom of the base of this equipment
is a label that contains, among other information,
the FCC Registration Number and Ringer
Equivalence Number (REN) for this equipment.
You must, upon request, provide this information
to your telephone company.
The REN is useful to determine the quantity of
devices you may connect to your telephone line and
still have all of those devices ring when your
telephone number is called. In most, but not all
areas, the sum of the REN’s of all devices connected
to one line should not exceed five (5.0).To be
certain of the number of devices you may connect
to your line, as determined by the REN, you
should contact your local telephone company to
determine the maximum REN for your calling area.
If your telephone equipment causes harm to the
telephone network, the telephone company may
discontinue your service temporarily. If possible,
they will notify you in advance. But if advance
notice isn’t practical, you will be notified as soon
as possible. You will be informed of your right to
file a complaint with the FCC.

8. Do not allow anything to rest on the power cord.
Do not place this product where the cord will be
abused by persons stepping on it.
9. Do not overload wall outlets and extension
cords as this can result in the risk of fire or
electric shock.
10. Never push objects of any kind into this product
through cabinet slots as they may touch
dangerous voltage points or short out parts that
could result in the risk of fire or electric shock.
Never spill liquid of any kind on this product.
11. To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not
disassemble this product, but take it to a
qualified serviceman when some service or
repair work is required. Opening or removing
covers may expose you to dangerous voltage or
other risks. Incorrect reassembly can cause
electric shock when the appliance is
subsequently used.
12. Unplug this product from the wall outlet and
refer servicing to qualified service personnel
under the following conditions:
a. When the power supply cord or plug is
damaged or frayed.
b. If liquid has been spilled into the product.
c. If the product has been exposed to rain or
water.
d. If the product does not operate normally by
following operating instructions. Adjust only
those controls that are covered by the
operating instructions because improper
adjustment may result in damage and will
often require extensive work by qualified
technician to restore the product to normal
operation.
e. If the product has been dropped or cabinet
has been damaged.
f. If the product exhibits a distinct change
in performance.
13. Avoid using the telephone (other than a cordless
type) during an electrical storm. There may be a
remote risk of electric shock from lightning.
14. Do not use the telephone to report a gas leak
in the vicinity of the leak.
15. Use only the power cord and batteries indicated
in this manual. Do not dispose of batteries in
a fire. They may explode. Check with local
codes for possible special disposal instructions.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR BATTERIES
(CAUTION)
TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE OR INJURY
TO PERSONS, READ AND FOLLOW THESE
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Use only the size and type of batteries
mentioned in the Owner’s Manual.
2. Do not dispose of the batteries in a fire. The
cells may explode.
3. Do not open or mutilate the batteries. Released
electrolyte is corrosive and may cause damage
to the eyes or skin. It may be toxic if swallowed.
4. Exercise care in handling batteries in order not
to short the battery with conducting materials
such as rings, bracelets, and keys. The battery
or conductor may overheat and cause burns.
5. Do not attempt to recharge the batteries
identified for use with this product. The batteries
may leak corrosive electrolyte or explode.
6. Do not attempt to rejuvenate the batteries
identified for use with this product by heating
them. Sudden release of the battery electrolyte
may occur causing burns or irritation to the eyes.
7. When replacing batteries, all batteries should be
replaced at the same time. Mixing fresh and
discharged batteries could increase internal cell
pressure and rupture the discharged batteries.
8. When inserting batteries into this product, the
proper polarity or direction must be observed.
Reverse insertion of batteries can cause charging,
and that may result in leakage or explosion.
9. Remove the batteries from this product if the
product will not be used for a long period of
time; batteries could leak in the product.
10. Discard “dead” batteries as soon as possible
since “dead” batteries are more likely to leak
into a product.
11. Do not store this product, or the batteries
identified for use with this product, in high
temperature areas. Batteries that are stored in a
freezer or refrigerator for the purpose of
extending shelf life should be protected from
condensation. Batteries should be stabilized at
room temperature prior to use after cold storage.

1. Read and understand all instructions.
2. Follow all warnings and instructions marked on
the product.
3. Unplug this product from the wall telephone
jack and power outlet before cleaning. Do not
use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners.
Use a damp cloth for cleaning.
4. Do not use this product near water, for example,
near a bathtub, washbowl, kitchen sink, laundry
tub, in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool.
5. Do not place this product on an unstable cart,
stand, or table. The product may fall, causing
serious damage to it.
6. Slots or openings in the cabinet and the back
and bottom are provided for ventilation, to
protect from overheating. These openings
should never be blocked or covered by placing
the product on a bed, or similar surface. This
product should never be placed near or over a
radiator or heat register.
7. This product should be operated only from the
type of power source indicated on the marking
label. If you are not sure of the type of power
supply to your home, consult your dealer or
local power company.

Note: You must install the batteries in order for the
Caller ID function to work properly.
4. Replace the battery cover. All characters of the
display will illuminate briefly.
5. The display will show “SET LANGUAGE s t”.
6. Press REVIEW s or REVIEW t to select
ENGLISH, FRENCH or SPANISH.
7. Press the ERASE button to confirm the selection.
8. Next, the display will show “CONTRAST s t”.
9. Press REVIEW s to make the contrast darker or
REVIEW t to make the contrast lighter.
10. Press the ERASE button to confirm the selection.
11. The display will show “CALL WAIT: MAIN”.
12. If you are using more than one Caller ID unit in
your telephone system, keep the setting at
“CALL WAIT: MAIN” for one unit, and set all of
the other units to “CALL WAIT: EXT” by pressing
REVIEW s or REVIEW t.
13. Press ERASE button to confirm the selection.
The display will show “12:00 AM 1/01”.

NOTE:
1. The correct date and time are automatically set when
your FM144 receives its first call.
2. If you try to use the telephone before finishing
the Caller ID set up, or if you pause more than 40
seconds during any of the above steps, the display
will show “SET LANGUAGE s t” to remind
you to finish the sequence.
3. To reset the language, remove the batteries and then
install them again within 2 minutes.
4. When the unit is in the standby mode (i.e. not
displaying Caller ID information), the current time
will display in the middle of the screen. In the
situations when the Caller ID information is
displayed, the current time will be shown in a
smaller size on the top line.
SET UP REQUIREMENTS
To install the FM144, your telephone must be
installed using modular connectors. If your
telephone is not wired using modular connectors,
contact your telephone supplier for the kit needed
for conversion.
CONNECTING DC POWER
NOTE: In order to extend the life of your batteries,
you can connect a DC power adapter. The power
adapter is not included, but it can be purchased
through our help line at 1-800-366-0937.
Use only with Class 2 Power Source DC 9V
150mA.
1. Push the plug of the optional DC adapter (not
included) into the 9V DC Jack of the back of the unit.
2. Plug the other end of the DC adapter into a
standard AC outlet.
CAUTION: Always unplug the adapter from the
AC outlet before you unplug it from the FM144.
CONNECTION TO TELEPHONE LINE
1. Unplug the telephone line cord of your
telephone from the modular wall jack and plug
it into the PHONE jack on your FM144.
2. Plug the fixed line cord of the FM144 into the
modular wall jack.
3. Make sure the FM144 is set to “MAIN”. (see
Installing Batteries section on page 7).
NOTE: The USOC jack RJ11C of the fixed line
cord used and the jack is Part 68 compliant.
NOTE: IF YOU ARE USING MORE THAN ONE
CALLER ID UNIT IN YOUR TELEPHONE SYS-
TEM, SET FM144 TO MAIN AND ALL OTHERS
TO EXT. (See Installing Batteries Section).
CONNECTION TO ANSWERING MACHINE
Your FM144 can be used with a telephone answer-
ing machine by following these instructions:
1. Unplug the telephone line cord of your telephone
from the modular wall jack and plug it into the
phone jack of your telephone answering machine.
2. Plug one end of the telephone line cord into the
LINE jack on your telephone answering machine.
3. Plug the other end of this line cord into the
phone jack of the FM144.
4. Plug the fixed line cord of the FM144 into the
modular wall jack.
5. Make sure the FM144 is set to “MAIN”. (see
Installing Batteries section on page 7).
6. You must set the answering machine to
answer in four or more rings in order to
receive the Caller ID information.
NOTE: IF YOU ARE USING MORE THAN ONE
CALLER ID UNIT IN YOUR TELEPHONE SYS-
TEM, SET FM144 TO MAIN AND ALL OTHERS
TO EXT. It is recommended that you use only one
FM144 per telephone wall jack.

You may call our toll free Help Line at 1-800-366-
0937 for an estimated service charge before
returning your unit. Please follow all instructions
for In-Warranty service to return your unit, and
mark the package: DEPT.: Out of Warranty
NOTE: If you want to review the Caller ID quickly
(about 5 records/second), press and HOLD the
REVIEW s or REVIEW t button. The unit will then
scroll through the Caller ID records continuously.
4. If no calls are in memory, pressing REVIEW s
or REVIEW t will display NO CALLS.
NOTE: The FM144 will retain call information for
your most recent 64 calls. When the memory is full,
the FM144 will automatically erase the oldest call
record and replace it with the newest call record.
ERASING INDIVIDUAL CALL INFORMATION
1. Press REVIEW s or REVIEW t until the call
record you want to erase is displayed.
2. Press ERASE and “ERASE?” will be displayed.
Press ERASE again to remove the call informa-
tion displayed.
3. The display will then show the previous call.
4. NO CALLS will be displayed if all call records
have been erased.
5. If no other key is pressed, after 20 seconds the
Time of Day screen and CALL XX (the total
number of calls stored in memory) will be displayed.
ERASING ALL CALL INFORMATION
1. With the Time of Day screen displayed, press
and hold ERASE.
2. “ERASE ALL?” Will be displayed.
3. Press ERASE button; ALL CALL INFORMATION
WILL BE ERASED. “--NO CALLS--” will be displayed.
4. After 5 seconds, the Time of Day screen will be
displayed.
LOW BATTERY INDICATION
When the batteries are low, the battery icon will
flash. Be sure to review all your calls before
changing the batteries, since stored information
may be lost when replacing batteries. Batteries
should be changed as soon as possible to main-
tain reliable operation. Also, old or weak batter-
ies can leak chemicals that can damage elec-
tronic circuits.
IMPORTANT: The unit should be idle for approx-
imately 2 minutes before installing new batter-
ies. Every time batteries are replaced, you need
to program the language and area code.
-In order to extend the life of your batteries, you
can connect a DC power adapter. The power adapter
is not included, but is can be purchased through our
help line at 1-800-366-0937.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
,
Your telephone rings but the FM144 doesnt display
any messages.
1. Check that the FM144 line cord is properly
plugged into the wall jack.
2. Check with your local telephone company to
make sure call waiting Caller ID service is
being provided on your telephone line.
3. Make sure the batteries have been properly
installed and the unit is not in the program
mode.
ERROR appears on the display.
1. Bad data may have been transmitted from the
telephone company.
---ERROR--- will disappear once call records
are received.
NOTE: It is normal for these problems to hap-
pen occassionally. If these happens often, con-
tact your phone company.
2. If you pick up the phone before the second
ring, the caller information will not be com-
pletely received.
3. If an answering machine is connected to the
same phone line as your FM144, it must be
set to answer after four or more rings.
Unit is not receiving calls.
1. Check that telephone cord from the wall jack
is properly plugged into FM144 LINE jack.
2. Remove the batteries and reinstall.
Unit is not receiving Call Waiting Caller ID calls.
1. You must subscribe to this service from your
local phone company.
2. The phone must be off-hook to hear the call
waiting Caller ID alert signal.
3. Make sure all the connections are secure.
SERVICE
According to FCC regulations, this equipment,
which has been certified and registered by the FCC,
may only be repaired by authorized persons. If
repairs or adjustments are made by an unauthorized
person, the FCC certification may be voided.

ADJUSTING THE DISPLAY CONTRAST
To adjust the LCD display contrast, press and hold
REVIEW s and REVIEW t buttons at the same time
for 2 seconds. Press REVIEW s to make the con-
trast darker or REVIEW t to make the contrast
lighter. Press ERASE to confirm the contrast.
CALLER ID OPERATION
RECEIVING CALLS
After the first ring, the following information will appear
on the display: NEW CALL icon, caller’s telephone
number (and name if available), call’s date and time,
REPEAT icon (if it is a repeat call), and an indication if
the caller information is not available or is blocked by
the sender. The NEW CALL icon and the NEW CALL
LED will flash until you review all your new calls.
NOTE: If you answer your telephone before the second
ring, the unit will not display any call information.
RECEIVING CALL WAITING CALLER ID
When you are on a existing phone call, your FM144 will
display incoming call waiting Caller ID information.
1. You will hear a beep and your telephone will
be muted momentarily while the unit is displaying
Caller ID information.
2. The CALL WAITING icon will be displayed.
3. When you access the call waiting call, the
Caller ID information will disappear and the
Time of Day screen will be displayed.
