BEFORE YOU BEGIN
PARTS CHECKLIST
Your package should contain the following items:
INTRODUCTION
CAUTION: When using telephone equipment,
there are basic safety instructions that should
always be followed. Refer to the IMPORTANT
SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS provided with this
product and save them for future reference.
Congratulations on purchasing this GE Speakerphone.
This speakerphone has been designed to be simple to
use, however, you can reach its full potential more
quickly by taking a few minutes to read this
instruction book.
SPEAKERPHONE LAYOUT
INSTALLING THE PHONE
CONNECTING THE TELEPHONE LINE
Choose the best location to install your speakerphone.
Your speakerphone should be placed on a level
surface such as a desk or table top, or you may mount
it on a wall.
1. Plug the coiled handset cord into the handset jack,
and jack on the left side of the base.
2. Plug the straight telephone line cord into a modular
telephone jack.
3. Adjust the RINGER volume switch to the desired
listening level.
The unit is properly installed if you pick up the
handset and hear the dial tone. If you don’t hear a
dial tone recheck all the installation steps.
NOTE: If desired, stuff excess telephone line cord
into the pocket on the bottom of the base.
WALL MOUNTING THE PHONE
The speakerphone may also be mounted on the wall
(wall plate not included).
1. Stuff the extra telephone line cord into the pocket
on the bottom of the base and feed the line cord
through the grooves on either end of the bottom.
2. Slip the mounting holes over the wall plate posts
and slide the unit down firmly into place.
TELEPHONE OPERATION
SPEAKERPHONE
For hands-free operation and convenience, this unit is
equipped with a speakerphone.
For best speakerphone performance, avoid the
following:
Areas with high background noise. (The
microphone might pick up these sounds and
prevent the speakerphone from going into the
receiving mode when you finish talking.)
Surfaces affected by vibration.
•Recessed areas such as in a corner, under a
cupboard, or next to a cabinet, which can generate
an echo effect.
Note the following guidelines when using the
speakerphone:
The speakerphone works similar to a two-way radio
in that you can only listen or talk at one time.
Stay reasonably close to the phone so that you can
be clearly heard by the person to whom you are
talking.
•You can adjust the speaker volume by adjusting the
VOLUME control on the right side of the base.
The speakerphone indicator comes on when the
speakerphone is in use.
NOTE: Only one-way conversation is possible in
speakerphone mode. When you are speaking, you
are transmitting. When you are listening, you are
receiving. You can’t do both at the same time. The
phone automatically switches between transmitting
and receiving depending on the level of the voice or
the room noise detected by the speakerphone
microphone.
IMPORTANT: Before using the speakerphone, pick
up the handset and listen for a dial tone. If you do
not hear a dial tone, recheck or repeat the
installation steps.
HANDSET
1. Pick up the handset and listen for a dial tone.
2. Dial the number you want to call.
3. When finished, hang up the handset.
SPEAKERPHONE
1. Press the SPEAKER button on the base and listen
for a dial tone.
2. Dial the number you want to call.
3. When finished, press the SPEAKER button to hang up.
ANSWERING A CALL
NOTE: Make sure the RINGER switch is set to HI or
LO or the phone will not ring.
HANDSET
1. When the phone rings, pick up the handset.
2. When finished, hang up the handset.
SPEAKERPHONE
1. When the phone rings, press the SPEAKER button
to answer a call.
2. When finished press the SPEAKER button to hang up.
You may switch between the speakerphone and the
handset during the dialing process or anytime during
a conversation.
Speakerphone to Handset - Pick up the handset to
disable the speakerphone. The speakerphone indicator
turns off.
Handset to Speakerphone - Press the SPEAKER
button, and then hang up the handset. The
speakerphone indicator turns on and the handset is
disabled.
VOLUME
You can control the volume of both the handset
receiver and the speakerphone.
While using the handset or speakerphone, adjust the
receiver or speaker volume switch, located on the
base, to the desired listening level.
FLASH
Press the FLASH button to activate customer calling
services such as call waiting or call transfer, which are
provided by your local phone company.
REDIAL
You may redial the last number you called by pressing
the REDIAL button after you get a dial tone.
NOTE: The Redial feature holds in memory the last
phone number you dialed (as many as 32 digits). If
you pressed any numbers after dialing the phone
number, (for example, when accessing a voice-menu
system) those numbers also are redialed.
MEMORY
Store as many as 10 numbers in memory for easy
dialing. Numbers can be stored in the numbered keys
(0, 1-9).
IMPORTANT: All numbers stored in Memory will be
erased if the phone line is disconnected from the
wall telephone phone jack for more than five
minutes. Write down any stored numbers you do not
want to loose.
STORING A NUMBER IN MEMORY
1. Make sure the telephone is properly installed. Pick
up the handset and listen for the dial tone. If you
don't hear the dial tone, recheck or repeat the
installation steps.
2. Press SPEAKER (or pick up the handset).
3. Press STORE.
4. Dial the number to be stored (up to 16 digits).
5. Press STORE button.
6. Press a Memory Location (0, 1-9 on the keypad).
7. P ress SPEAKER (or hang up the handset).
8. Record the phone number on the memory
directory label.
ADDING A PAUSE TO THE DIALING
SEQUENCE
Use the REDIAL button to insert a delay in the dialing
sequence when storing a number, for example, when
you need to dial 9 to get an outside line.
Press REDIAL at the point in the dialing sequence in
which a pause is required.
The pause time is 4 seconds, if an additional 4
seconds is needed, press the REDIAL button again.
CHANGING A STORED NUMBER
Change a stored number by replacing it with a
different number.
DIALING A NUMBER FROM MEMORY
You can dial numbers from memory when using the
handset or speakerphone. When you get a dial tone,
press the MEMORY button followed by the memory
location (0, 1-9) for the number you want to dial.
EQUIPMENT APPROVAL INFORMATION
Your telephone equipment is approved for connection to the Public Switched
Telephone Network and is in compliance with parts 15 and 68, FCC Rules and
Regulations and the Technical Requirements for Telephone Terminal Equipment
published by ACTA.
1 Notification to the Local Telephone Company
On the bottom of this equipment is a label indicating, among other
information, the US number and Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) for the
equipment. You must, upon request, provide this information to your
telephone company.
The REN is useful in determining the number of devices you may connect to
your telephone line and still have all of these devices ring when your
telephone number is called. In most (but not all) areas, the sum of the RENs of
all devices connected to one line should not exceed 5. To be certain of the
number of devices you may connect to your line as determined by the REN,
you should contact your local telephone company.
A plug and jack used to connect this equipment to the premises wiring and
telephone network must comply with the applicable FCC Part 68 rules and
requirements adopted by the ACTA. A compliant telephone cord and modular
plug is provided with this product. It is designed to be connected to a
compatible modular jack that is also compliant. See installation instructions for
details.
Notes
This equipment may not be used on coin service provided by the telephone
company.
•Party lines are subject to state tariffs, and therefore, you may not be able to
use your own telephone equipment if you are on a party line. Check with
your local telephone company.
Notice must be given to the telephone company upon permanent
disconnection of your telephone from your line.
If your home has specially wired alarm equipment connected to the
telephone line, ensure the installation of this product does not disable your
alarm equipment. If you have questions about what will disable alarm
equipment, consult your telephone company or a qualified installer.
2 Rights of the Telephone Company
Should your equipment cause trouble on your line which may harm the telephone
network, the telephone company shall, where practicable, notify you that
temporary discontinuance of service may be required. Where prior notice is not
practicable and the circumstances warrant such action, the telephone company
may temporarily discontinue service immediately. In case of such temporary
discontinuance, the telephone company must: (1) promptly notify you of such
temporary discontinuance; (2) afford you the opportunity to correct the situation;
and (3) inform you of your right to bring a complaint to the Commission pursuant
to procedures set forth in Subpart E of Part 68, FCC Rules and Regulations.
The telephone company may make changes in its communications facilities,
equipment, operations or procedures where such action is required in the
operation of its business and not inconsistent with FCC Rules and Regulations. If
these changes are expected to affect the use or performance of your telephone
equipment, the telephone company must give you adequate notice, in writing, to
allow you to maintain uninterrupted service.
INTERFERENCE INFORMATION
This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the
following two conditions: (1) This device may not cause harmful interference; and
(2) This device must accept any interference received, including interference that
may cause undesired operation.
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B
digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to
provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential
installation.
This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if
not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful
interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that
interference will not occur in a particular installation.
If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception,
which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is
encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following
measures:
•Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna (that is, the antenna for radio or
television that is “receiving” the interference).
•Reorient or relocate and increase the separation between the
telecommunications equipment and receiving antenna.
Connect the telecommunications equipment into an outlet on a circuit different
from that to which the receiving antenna is connected.
If these measures do not eliminate the interference, please consult your dealer or
an experienced radio/television technician for additional suggestions. Also, the
Federal Communications Commission has prepared a helpful booklet, “How To
Identify and Resolve Radio/TV Interference Problems.” This booklet is available
from the U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402. Please specify

What your warranty covers:
Defects in materials or workmanship.
For how long after your purchase:
One year, from date of purchase.
(The warranty period for rental units begins with
the first rental or 45 days from date of shipment
to the rental firm, whichever comes first.)
What we will do:
•Provide you with a new or, at our option, a
refurbished unit. The exchange unit is under
warranty for the remainder of the original
product’s warranty period.
How you get service:
•Properly pack your unit. Include any cables,
etc., which were originally provided with the
product. We recommend using the original
carton and packing materials.
•”Proof of purchase in the form of a bill of sale
or receipted invoice which is evidence that the
product is within the warranty period, must be
presented to obtain warranty service.” For
rental firms, proof of first rental is also re-
quired. Also print your name and address and
a description of the defect. Send via standard
UPS or its equivalent to:

What your warranty

Customer instruction. (Your Owner’s Manual
provides information regarding operating
instructions and user controls. Any additional
information, should be obtained from your
dealer.)
Installation and setup service adjustments.
Batteries.
Damage from misuse or neglect.
•Products which have been modified or incorpo-
rated into other products.
•Products purchased or serviced outside the USA.
Acts of nature, such as but not limited to
lightning damage.
Product Registration:
Please complete and mail the Product Registra-
tion Card packed with your unit. It will make it
easier to contact you should it ever be neces-
sary. The return of the card is not required for
warranty coverage.
Limitation of Warranty:
THE WARRANTY STATED ABOVE IS THE ONLY
WARRANTY APPLICABLE TO THIS PRODUCT.
ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR

CHAIN DIALING FROM MEMORY
Use this feature to make calls which require a
sequence of numbers, for instance if you use a calling
card for a frequently called long distance number. By
dialing each part of the sequence from memory. The
following example shows how you can use chain
dialing to make a call through a long distance service:

1. Press SPEAKER (or pick up the handset).
2. Press the MEMORY button and then press 7.
3. When you hear the access tone, press MEMORY
and then press 8.
4. At the next access tone, press MEMORY and then 9.
TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
No dial tone. Won't dial out
Check the hook switch. Make sure it fully extends
when the handset is lifted from the cradle.
Make sure speakerphone indicator comes on (if
using speakerphone.)
Unplug the phone, wait 30 seconds, and plug the
phone back in. Then lift the handset to check the dial
tone.
Phone doesn’t ring
Make sure ringer switch is set to LO or HI.
•You may have too many extension phones on your
line. Unplug some extension phones.
Check for a dial tone. If there is no dial tone see
solutions for "No dial tone."
Low handset or speaker volume
Check the receiver or speaker volume settings.
Can’t be heard by other party
Make sure phone cord is securely plugged in.
Make sure extension phones are on the hook at the
same time you're using the phone. It is normal for
the volume to drop when additional extension
phones are used at the same time.
Memory dialing
Make sure you entered numbers correctly. (See
"Memory.")
Make sure the telephone is properly installed. Pick
up the handset and listen for the dial tone. If you
don't hear the dial tone, recheck or repeat the
installation steps.
GENERAL PRODUCT CARE
To keep your telephone working and looking good,
follow these guidelines:
•Avoid putting it near heating appliances and
devices that generate electrical noise (for example,
motors or fluorescent lamps).
DO NOT expose to direct sunlight or moisture.
•Avoid dropping and other rough treatment to the
answerer.
Clean with a soft cloth.
Never use a strong cleaning agent or abrasive
powder because this will damage the finish.
•Retain the original packaging in case you need to
ship it at a later date.
SERVICE
If trouble is experienced with this equipment, for
repair or warranty information, please contact
customer service at 1-800-448-0329. If the equipment
is causing harm to the telephone network, the
telephone company may request that you disconnect
the equipment until the problem is resolved.
This product may be serviced only by the
manufacturer or its authorized service agents.
Changes or modifications not expressly approved by

TELEPHONE JACK REQUIREMENTS
To use this phone, you need an
RJ11C type modular telephone
jack, which might look like the
one pictured here, installed in
your home. If you don’t have a
modular jack, call your local
phone company to find out how
to get one installed.
IMPORTANT INSTALLATION
INFORMATION
Never install telephone wiring during a lightning
storm.
Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless
the jack is specifically designed for wet locations.
Never touch non-insulated telephone wires or
terminals, unless the telephone line has been
disconnected at the network interface.
Use caution when installing or modifying telephone
lines.
•Temporarily disconnect any equipment connected
to the phone such as faxes, other phones, or
modems.
IMPORTANT INSTALLATION
GUIDELINES
Install telephone near both a telephone (modular)
jack.
•Avoid sources of noise, such as a window by a busy
street, and electrical noise, such motors, microwave
ovens, and fluorescent lighting.
•Avoid heat sources, such as heating air ducts,
heating appliances, radiators, and direct sunlight.
•Avoid areas of excessive moisture or extremely low
temperature.
•Avoid dusty locations.
•Avoid other cordless telephones or personal
computers.
